The
quirky QWERTY
keyboard
Ever looked at a typewriter or a computer
keyboard and wondered about the absurd arrangement of alphabet? It’s
called the QWERTY design because the letters Q, W, E, R, T, and Y appear
in a row on the keyboard.
This design was proposed primarily to slow down typists. Typists tended
to jam the early typewriters when their fingers flew too fast over the
keyboard.
Remington Sewing Machine Company was the first to manufacture typewriters
with the QWERTY format. Soon, the market was flooded with QWERTY keyboards
and the number of skilled QWERTY typists increased.
Thus, the keyboard, designed to slacken the speed of a typist, has become
the most popular model among typists and aspiring typists. |
